In
Tasmania, the Araceae family consists of two
naturalised lily-like species and four native duckweed
species.
Zentedeschia aethiopica and
Arum italicum are garden
escapees with a distinctive white flower and large (>20
cm) heart-shaped leaves.
The four native species are duckweeds. Wolffia
australiana, Lemna
disperma, L. trisulca and Landoltia
punctata, are all tiny, free floating aquatic herbs
that often mass together to form a carpet-like cover on
still water bodies. They lack true leaves, and are reduced
to a photosynthetic thallus that often lacks roots. The
flowers are miniscule, and reduced to simple ovaries or
stamens. |
