Tasmania
has one naturalised species of Araceae. White arum lily (Zantedeschia
aethiopica) is a common garden plant that persists in
abandoned gardens (e.g. on old farms etc). The leaves have
large heart-shaped laminas (~30 cm long) at the ends of long
petioles. The flowers are large, asymmetrical, creamy white
and tubular with a yellow column in the centre.
Z. aethiopica looks a little like another naturalised
species, Arum italicum,
except its leaves are not variegated, the spathe (white part
of the flower) is wider than A. italicum and the
mouth of the spathe faces upwards.
