Tasmania
has four native species of Wurmbea (early nancy).
Two of these (W. dioica
& W. uniflora)
are moderately common species that grow in heaths, grassland
and dry open forest. In Tasmania W.
biglandulosa has been found only on Badger
Island in Bass Strait and W.
latifolia only from the far north-west of the
state at Woolnorth.
The plants have two or three narrow leaves growing from the
erect stem. The flowers are white with some species having
pink or purple dots or bands on the tepals. The brown
spherical seeds are contained in a capsule. The plant
has a corm and is dormant in summer. |
