Wurmbea dioica (early nancy) can be found in the Midlands, North East, East Coast and Furneaux Islands from the coast up to approximately 200 m in altitude.

This specie grows in grassland, low coastal shrubbery, on the fringe of dry woodland and frequently in poor quality pasture.

Plants grow to between 20 and 30 cm in height and have 3 widely separated finely tapered leaves.  It is dioecious and commonly has 2 to 7 white flowers with a purple band (the nectary) and purple anthers. It flowers July to September.

Species distinguishing characteristics: Dioecious (female and male flowers occur on different plants) or the flowers bisexual; purple nectaries; finely tapered leaves.
