Robust plant with leaves to 95 cm long and
1.5 - 3.5 cm wide.
Leaf forms a sheath below the blade which
closely overlaps the sheath of another leaf. The two
edges of the sheath are fused in the upper part.
Leaf blade margins and midrib prominently
serrate-scabrous.

Smallish plant
with leaves to 45 cm long and 0.4-1.2 cm wide.
Leaf forms a loose sheath below the blade, the margins of
the sheath not fused. Leaf blade margins and midrib smooth
or sparsely serrate-scabrous.
