| Plantago
major (great plantain) is a widespread and quite
common weed species that grows in disturbed and cultivated
areas. It has no taproot, but has numerous adventitious
roots. The leaves are generally held flat to the ground in a
rosette, and are 5-20cm long but relatively broad (2-10cm
wide). They tend to be quite thin and often pale green, and
not obviously hairy. They have 5-7 main veins. The flowers
are in spikes but are not densely packed. The other main
weed plantains (P.
lanceolata, P.
varia and
P. coronopus) have narrower leaves that are
held above the ground. |
