| Plantago
varia (variable plantain) is a very common, largish,
native species. It is a rosette herb with a taproot. It
grows in rocky places in a wide range of environments
(including lawns, pasture, roadsides etc). The leaves are
mostly 6-20 cm long, and 3-20 mm wide, and hairy. They do
not have a distinct petiole and are held at least partly
upright. They have tufts of long, reddish hairs at the
bases. There are several similar species. The rare grassland
species, P.
gaudichaudiana, has very narrow leaves. The
rare forest understorey species, P.
debilis, and the more widespread species, P. hispida, have
short white or yellow-brown hairs at the bases of the
leaves. P.
antarctica is alpine. |
