Tasmania
has one species of Hypolaena (H. fastigiata).
It is common native herb in both wet and dry heath. It is a
more-or-less typical member of Restionaceae, with erect
stems bearing several scarious bracts, and terminal
inflorescences of spikelets. It has sinuous, quite often
branched stems, rather like
Empodisma , but unlike Empodisma, the
stems are distinctly glaucous (blue and matt), from a
covering of tiny white scales. The stems are usually rather
slender. Sporodanthus
also has sinuous, glaucous stems but is usually larger
and has spikes with only a couple of flowers.
