Ranunculus pumilio
(ferny
buttercup) is a small, rare herb. It is grows in wet
places in grasslands, especially in the northern Midlands.
The plant is tufted, with slender stems 5-30 cm long,
spreading from the base of the plant, and often trailing
across the ground.
The leaves are small (only about 1cm wide), shaggy with
hairs and trifoliate, with each leaflet often trilobed.
They are light grass green.
It has very small, yellow-green flowers. The achenes
("seeds") have numerous bristles on their sides and edges.
This species is similar to R.
sessiliflorus, which is, however, a species of
dry forests and dry grasslands and has achenes ("seeds")
with only a few bristles. |
