| Ammophila
arenaria (marram grass) is a European species that has
been deliberately introduced to Tasmania to bind sand dunes,
and has colonised large areas of sandy coastline. It appears
to be displacing native grasses and other species.
It is readily distinguished from the native species that
bind dunes. Marram grass has long, silvery leaves up to 60
cm long and soft, silvery, long cylindrical
inflorescences, where as
Austrostipa has sharp pointed leaves and
Spinifex has spherical
inflorescences.
