| Lomatia
tinctoria (guitarplant) is a common and widespread
species. It grows in dry sclerophyll forests and subalpine
woodlands. It is a medium sized shrub that has elongated
spikes of whitish flowers. The fruit are follicles that look
like guitars when open. The fruit are follicles that look
like guitars when open. The leaves are extraordinarily
diverse in shape - they range from completely unlobed to
three times divided, the lobes can be only a mm or so wide,
up to about 10mm wide. Although the common forms of
the two species are strikingly different, L. tinctoria
intergrades seamlessly with L.
polymorpha (notably in the Lake St Claire
area). This could be the result of repeated hybridisation. |
