This family includes a few introduced species of woody climbers and shrubs and some herbs from the genera Dipsacus and Scabiosa which were once included in the family Dipsacaceae. The flowers have inferior ovaries with 2-5 joined ovaries and may be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Sambucus was previously included in this family, but is now recognised as a species of Viburnaceae.
