| Tecticornia (formerly known
as Sclerostegia; Arthrocnemum) (Amaranthaceae)

| Tasmania
has one native species of Tecticornia. Tecticornia arbuscula
(= Sclerostegia arbuscula; Arthrocnemum arbuscula) is
a common saltmarsh plant with succulent opposite, scale-like
leaves. The foliage is very similar to that of Salicornia,
but the habit is very different. Tecticornia is an
upright, much branched shrub, whereas Salicornia spp
form ground covers, although the terminal branches are
erect. Also Tecticornia has only 1-3 flowers per
node, whereas Salicornia has 3-9 flowers per node.
