Two species

Tasmania
has two native species of Salicornia commonly
referred to as samphire or glasswort. S. quinqueflora
is usually shiny green or red, whereas S. blackiana
is glaucous. However, to identify to species level it is
necessary to examine the seeds.
Both are common saltmarsh plants with succulent opposite,
scale-like leaves. The foliage is very similar to that of Tecticornia, but the
habit is very different. Tecticornia is an upright,
much branched shrub, whereas Salicornia spp form
ground covers, although the terminal branches are erect.
Also Tecticornia only has 1-3 flowers per node,
whereas Salicornia has 3-9 flowers per node. |
