Argyrotegium mackayi (=Euchiton argentifolius; = Gnaphalium argentifolium) is a reasonably common and widespread alpine or subalpine species. It usually has solitary flower heads, (although forms bearing 3-10 flower heads do  occasionally occur on mainland Australia).  It resembles Argyrotegium fordianum, a more robust and less common plant which has clusters of 5-15 flower heads and phyllaries more than 5 mm long.

A. mackayi grows in well-drained, short, montane herbfields or grassland through to quite boggy sites.

Because of the variation between different forms of A. mackayi, the key has two results for this species.
