| Tasmania
has two native genera of Asteliaceae, Astelia and Milligania.
Both genera are most common in boggy places in the alpine or
subalpine zone, where they form coarse mats. The leaves of
all the species are quite coarse (usually a few cm wide and
pleated).
Asteliaceae was once considered to be part of
Liliaceae, which was a very artificial grouping of plants
and has therefore been splintered into numerous families.
