Amaryllidaceae
is a moderately large family of lily-like plants, that
includes several common garden plants.
Tasmania has seven introduced genera in the Amaryllidaceae,
including all four genera which belonged to the Alliaceae, a
family which now does not exist in Tasmania.
They are quite robust herbs with long, narrow leaves
arising from bulbs (though Amaryllis is often
leafless when flowering).
These genera were once considered to be part of
Liliaceae, which was a very artificial grouping of plants
and has therefore been splintered into numerous families.
