| Isophysis
tasmanica (hewardia or tasmanian purplestar) is a
common native herb of alpine and subalpine areas of western
and southern Tasmania, where it grows in sedgeland and
herbfield. Like many irises they are tufted plants, with the
stems flattened and the leaves in two rows. The plants are
relatively small (up to about 30cm tall), but the flowers
are large and distinctive. They are usually dark purple
(almost black), though occasionally yellow, with widely
spreading, narrow petals and sepals 5 or 6 cm long. |
