| Tasmania
has eight native species in two genera of the filmy ferns
(family Hymenophyllaceae). These all grow in the understorey
of wet forests on rocks or as epiphytes. The key feature is
that the lamina is only one cell thick (and indeed,
ecologically the filmy ferns function like large
bryophytes). This results in the filmy appearance (of
all but one of the species) that gives them their common
name. The exception is Hymenophyllum applanatum
because it is densely covered in hairs. |
