The
only genus of Typhaceae is Typha. Tasmania has two
native species, Typha domingensis (slender
cumbungi) and T. orientalis (broadleaf
cumbungi). There is also one introduced specie in
Tasmania, T. latifolia (great reedmace).
These are all emergent aquatics although T. latifolia
occasionally grows in damp ground. They are large, erect
plants (up to 3m tall with stems 2-3 cm thick) with long,
grass-like leaves in two rows. The stems are topped by an
unmistakable inflorescence, which comprises a compact
sausage-like section of tiny female flowers (this section is
thicker than the stalk) topped by a thinner, more diffuse
male section. In fruit the female section forms a mass of
furry, wind-dispersed seeds. |
