| Aponogeton (Aponogetonaceae) 4b:13 |

| The
only species of the family Apogetonaceae in Tasmania is a
naturalised species of Aponogeton. Aponogeton
distachyos (cape pondweed or water hawthorn) is a
rooted aquatic. Leaves have long petioles and large,
parallel-veined oblong or elliptical blades that float on
the surface of the water. The flowers are in an
inflorescence that also floats on the water on a long stalk.
The inflorescence has two branches, each bearing several
flowers - the flowers are sessile and comprise a single,
white petal a few cm long and a cluster of stamens and
carpels. |
