In Tasmania, this family includes Pimelea, Kelleria (= Drapetes in the students flora) and the introduced genus Daphne. The family is characterised by tubular flowers arranged in loose heads of few to many flowers. There are 1, 2, 4 or 8 stamens. attached to the floral tube. The leaves of most species are opposite.

Most species are shrubs, although one species (Pimelea pygmaea) is a cushion plant. Species occur in a range of forest, grassland and heath environments. All Tasmanian species except Daphne are native.
