Donatia
novae-zelandiae was formerly considered to be part of
the family Donatiaceae, which does not now exist in
Tasmania.
It is an alpine cushion plant that is common on western and
central mountains. The bases of the leaves of this species
have a dense mat of hairs. When not in flower or fruit, this
species can be confused with Abrotanella
forsterioides, which has a single hair at the
end of the leaf, and Dracophyllum
minimum which has reddish tips to the leaves and
lacks hairs. Other superficially similar cushion species (Phyllachne colensoi, Scleranthus
and Colobanthus
species) have distinctly yellowish green foliage. |
