| The
Stylidiaceae is the trigger plant family, and is
characterised by an asymmetrical fused corolla and the
presence of two stamens fused to the style to form a column.
Stylidium is the trigger plant, in which the column,
upon irritation, moves across to trap insects as part of a
pollination strategy. Species range from rosette herbs to
alpine cushion plants (Phyllachne colensoi and Donatia
novae-zelandiae). Most species have distinctly
asymmetrical flowers, but those of Forstera bellidifolia
are nearly symmetrical. One native species, Levenhookia
dubia, is now considered to be extinct and is not
included in this key.
