The Ranunculaceae is a large family worldwide. Most species are herbs, although Clematis species are mostly woody climbers. Tasmania has a number of native genera and a few introduced species. The characteristic features are the "primitive" flowers with many floral parts. The small alpine herb, Psychrophila phylloptera, which grows on eastern and central mountains has unique appendages on the tops of the leaves. The key presented here does not include a very rare genus of small plants, Myosuris (yet).
