Tasmania
has four introduced species of Setaria
(pigeongrass), including S. parviflora (slender
pigeongrass), S. italica (italian millet or foxtail
millet) and S. viridis (green pigeongrass).
Some of these are reasonably common weed species. The
inflorescence is a quite compact, more-or-less cylindrical
structure. The very distinctive feature of these grasses is
that each spikelet has one to four bristles beneath it. In
some species (especially whorled pigeongrass, S.
verticillata) these catch in hair and clothing. The
spikelets are small, have two florets (the upper one with
stamens and an ovary, the lower sterile) and lack awns. |
