| Phragmites
australis (common reed or southern reed) is a
reasonably common native grass of estuarine and lowland
river banks (for example the lower Derwent). It is a large,
erect grass (up to 3 m tall), with leaves spread up the
stem. The leave are 20-60 cm long and 2-5 cm wide. It is
sometimes confused with a weed species from similar habits (Spartina anglica),
but differs most obviously in its inflorescence. Phragmites
has a large feathery inflorescence, whereas that of Spartina
is composed of 2-6 narrow spikes. |
