Tasmania
has two introduced species of fog grass (Holcus).
H. Mollis (creeping fog) and H. lanatus,
(yorkshire fog).
H. lanatus is a very common weed of pastures,
roadsides and waste ground. The species are moderately large
grasses with soft hairy leaves that are up to 1cm wide. The
inflorescence is a large panicle that is fairly compact,
becoming more spreading with age. The spikelets are small
(~5mm long) and have two flowers (rarely three, but in this
case the third floret is tiny and lacking any reproductive
parts). The key feature is that the lower flower is
hermaphrodite, whereas lacks an ovary. The glumes are larger
than the flowers, which have very short awns. |
