| Lomatia
tasmanica (king's holly or kings lomatia) is a rare
plant only found in one area near the south coast. It has
bipinnate leaves with lobes that have acute/acuminate points
(unlike the rounded tips with mucros in L. tinctoria).
It is a remarkable plant - it is triploid, and is apparently
a single ancient clone. Fossils identical to this species
suggest that this clone might be more than 40,000 years old.
It has purplish flowers (unlike the cream flowers in the
other species), but has never been seen with fruit. |
