| Cenarrhenes
nitida is the only species in this genus, and is only
found in western and southern Tasmania. It is an erect shrub
or small tree that is found in rainforest from sea level to
the tree line and also grows in button grass vegetation. The
leaves are long (often 10 cm), usually longest near the tip,
which is usually rounded. The leaves have an unpleasant
"stale cabbage" smell when crushed. In rainforest it is
sometime confused for Anopterus
glandulosus (Escalloniaceae), which however has
leaves in false whorls, does not smell bad and has acute
leaf apices. The fruit are fleshy (hence the common names
"native plum" or "port arthur plum"). The flowers are
symmetrical and have free tepals. |
