There is some debate as to whether some
populations of Lythrum salicaria (purple
loosestrife) are native or introduced. L.
salicaria is also native to Europe and is an
invasive weed in a number of areas, including North
America. It is a large, erect herb with drooping
willow-like leaves and dense terminal spikes of pinkish
purple flowers. It is found near water in locally warm
places.
