Melicytus angustifolius is a widespread shrub with
small, entire, alternate leaves that are usually sparsely
arranged on tough branches that end in sharpish points. The
flowers are small and yellow (very unlike other Violaceae)
and the fruit is fleshy. It can be superficially similar to
Coprosma nitida.
It is usually found in dry areas under light forest or
woodland and along river banks, but can grow as an alpine
plant amongst boulders. In developed areas it is often found
along fence lines.
Another species, M. dentatus, has also been recorded
in Tasmania but is probably extinct in this state.
