The
Polygalaceae are represented in Tasmania by a few native
species of Comesperma (mostly shrubs, but C.
volubile is an almost leafless twiner). Also, a couple
of species of Polygala have been naturalised. The
flowers are conspicuous and asymmetrical. The Tasmanian
species have five sepals - three small ones, and two large
ones similar in colour to the petals and forming wings on
either side of the flower. There are three petals.
