Orthotrichum rupestre (Orthotrichaceae) Orthotrichum rupestre is a much-branched turf-forming rock moss. The leaves are lance-like with a nerve typically ending below the leaf apex. When dry, the leaves are appressed onto the stem. The wide-mouthed capsules are borne on a short stalk but sometimes appear immersed (partly covered by leaves or emergent). It superficially resembles Racomitrium crispulum but the capsules or that species are borne on a much longer stalk. Schistidium apocarpum is also similar but the mouth is bright orange.
