Eucalyptus
gunnii (cider gum) is a spreading tree found
in frosty areas, especially on the Central Plateau. It is
one of the gum group of species, with 3 flowers per umbel
and smelling of eucalyptus oil when crushed.
It grades into E.
archeri along
the northern margin of the Central Plateau. Populations on
the Central Plateau have been severely affected by dieback.
There are two subspecies:
E. gunnii subsp. gunnii is a small to medium
tree found on the Central Plateau, Eastern Tiers and Snug
Plains. Its twigs, leaves, buds and fruit are grey-green to
sub-glaucous
E. gunnii subsp. divaricata is a large tree
with widely spreading branches found on the eastern, western
and southern shores of Great Lake and at Miena. Its twigs,
leaves, buds and fruit are very glaucous.
