Eucalyptus
cordata (tasmanian silver gum) is a rare, endemic species found only in
south-eastern Tasmania. It retains its juvenile leaves for a
long time, and most plants never gain adult foliage. The
leaves are glaucous and heart shaped. There are two
subspecies:
E. cordata subsp. cordata which grows mainly
east of the River Derwent, has branchlets which are circular
in cross section
E. cordata subsp. quadrangulosa which grows
mainly west of the river has branchlets which are square in
cross section.
