Key to Tasmanian Dicots
Back

Liverworts
Plants with obvious leaves
Leaves not spirally arranged
Leaves without ventral sacs
Leaves not complicate-bilobed or folded
Leaf toothed, lobed or spine-like but shape evident
Underleaves present

Note - the incubous or succubous leaf condition in some liverworts sometimes approaches the transverse condition. Careful examination of the angle at which the leaf is inserted on the stem is required. This part of the key makes allowances for species that may have incubous or succubous leaves that approach the transverse condition

Leaves inserted longitudinally on the stem (or appearing almost so)
Leaves incubous; i.e when viewed from the top, the leaves further down the stem overlaps those near the apex (or would do so if the leaves were overlapping on the stem)
Leaves succubous;  i.e when viewed from the top, the leaves further down the stem are overlapped by those nearer the apex (or would do so if the leaves were overlapping on the stem)

Leaves transversely inserted onto the stem (or appearing almost so)
