In Tasmania,
Gackstroemia is represented by one species,
Gackstroemia weindorferi. An exceedingly common species, G.
weindorferi can be expected in practically any wet forest and
rainforest and also in relatively exposed sub-alpine areas where
there is sufficient humidity. In the latter instance, plants are
usually tinged red. G. weindorferi is also an extremely
adaptable species, being able to occupy numerous substrate types (eg,
bark, logs, ground etc) provided that there is sufficient humidity.
The fan-like or weft habit and large two-lobed (bifid) underleaves distinguish
this species from Lepidolaena, which are largely restricted to rainforest.
