Aneura alterniloba is reasonably common thalloid liverwort of
wet forest to rainforest, often occurring on wet clayey soil or
rocks but sometimes also on logs.
The thallus of A. alterniloba is smooth and the margins
tend to reflex downwards, especially in drier conditions. A.
alterniloba is most easily mistaken for hornworts, particularly
when sterile. However, the thallus of A. alterniloba
tends to be more opaque and brighter green. More reliable
distinguishing features are microscopic. Hornworts have Nostoc
(an alga) cavities which are lacking in Aneura and also
single or few chloroplasts per cell while Aneura has
numerous.
