About fifteen species of this family are native to Tasmania. They include a shrub (Goodenia ovata) and herbs from several genera. They occur in a wide range of habitats - from saltmarsh to wet and dry forests to alpine herbfields.

Most of the flowers are asymmetrical and the corolla lobes of most genera are more or less triangular. All species have corolla lobes with thinner wings on either side with the exception of Goodenia radicans and Brunonia australis.

Most species have inferior ovaries, the exceptions being  G. montana and G. paradoxa, in which the ovaries are superior.
