Gentianella and Chionogentias

Tasmania
has seven native species of Gentianella (all
included in Gentianella diemensis in The Student's
Flora of Tasmania). One species of Chionogentias has
been recorded only once (in 1843) and there is some doubt
that it is a genuine species rather than a tetraploid plant
of another species. Gentianellas are erect herbs with
conspicuous white/purplish flowers that are sometimes
streaked. They are very common in alpine areas, especially
in boggy places, but also extend to the lowlands.
Six of the species growing in alpine areas are commonly
called snowgentians, while the two species found in lowland
areas are known as forestgentians.
For a number of years these species were all classified as Chionogentias,
but recently all but one have been returned to Gentianella. |
