Tasmania has one genus of Casuarinaceae (Allocasuarina, sheoak), with seven native species. This is one of the most distinctive of flowering plant families. The species are all trees or shrubs. The stems are cylindrical, ridged and photosynthetic, and are interrupted by nodes with whorls of scales, which represent the leaves. The flowers are unisexual, and female inflorescences develop into woody cones containing many seeds.
