Stipules are leaf-like or bract-like structures attached to
the stem at the base of the leaf. They are very variable in form, but are
important indicators of different groups of plants |

| Ochreas are a special form of stipule found in Polygonaceae - they form a translucent sheath around the stem (be careful not confuse this with a sheathing leaf base - ochreas are below the petiole) | If the leaves are opposite, they may be small, translucent structures between the a pair of leaves. Sometimes they are fused around the stem. | Occasionally they resemble leaves or leaflets. |
They may be very small, and each leaf may have one or two stipules |
