Oxylobium
oxylobioides (sandstone bushpea) is a rare, erect
shrub up to 3 m in height. Leaves are small 2-10mm in
length and 1-4mm wide, opposite (occasionally in whorls of
three) and convex.
Flowering profusely in spring (October to November), the
orange-yellow flowers are considerably larger than the
leaves. The fruit is a brown oblong pod, containing up
to 10 seeds. O. oxylobioides is thought to be
an obligate seeder (plants that only regenerate after fire
from seed).
In Tasmania it is only been found in sandstone scarps near
Elderslie in the Southern Midlands.
Until recently O. oxylobioides was known as Mirbelia
oxylobioides and was first found in Tasmania in 1998. |
