Medicago sativa (alfalfa, lucerne) is a widely cultivated green fodder plant that has become a common weed of agricultural areas. It is an erect, almost hairless herb with trifoliate leaves and conspicuous purple flowers.

M. sativa subsp. x varia (sickle medick) was previously misidentified as M. falcata in Tasmania
