| Tasmania
has eight native and two introduced species of Cardamine
(bittercress). They are smallish species found in shady
places or on river banks or similar wet places. The species
are often very difficult to distinguish.
The two introduced species (C. flexuosa and C.
hirsuta) can be picked by having some hairs on the
stems and/or leaves (you need a hand-lens or microscope).
C. tenuifolia is easily identified by its habit (a
trailing swamp plant). C. astoniae is a prostrate
alpine plant with a stolon. The remaining species are
fairly similar, and further research may result in
reclassification of these species (into more or less
species).
