Olearia phlogopappa is a widespread and common shrub
of dry forests and subalpine woodlands. It has moderately
sized, toothed leaves and heads that are solitary or a few
together in the leaf axils. The lower leaf surface is
covered in stellate hairs, like its relatives,
O. lirata and
O. stellulata. These three species seem to
intergrade with each other making some forms hard to
identify. O. phlogopappa has the smallest and
thickest leaves of these species.
