Cardoon,
artichoke thistle or wild artichoke (Cynara cardunculus)
is a large herb that has sometimes become naturalised. The
leaves are all basal, but are very large (often >1m
long), blue and deeply lobed with spines along the margins.
The flower heads are large, with sharply-pointed phyllaries
(the bracts around the head). It is related to globe
artichokes (Cynara scolymus), but that species has
soft phyllaries and the leaves lack spines.
