Tasmania has two introduced species of Centaurea.
They are both robust annual or biennial herbs with erect
stems with only tube flowers. C. melitensis,
(maltese cockspur or malta thistle), the yellow-flowered
thistle, has a spinous flower head.
C. x moncktonii (knapweed) has fringed
appendages on the phyllaries
