Tasmania has two species of Lilaeopsis. They are
both aquatic or semi-aquatic plants.
Lilaeopsis polyantha (formerly known as L.
brownii) is a reasonably common plant with very
distinctive septate leaves (they are narrow, succulent, a
few cm long and appear to be segmented).
It grows in marshes and intermittently flooded tidal
regions. Submerged specimens may appear as grass-like tufts
of leaves connected by a pale rhizome.
L. novae-zelandiae is a very similar plant from
similar habitats.
The two species are best distinguished by their fruit
characterisitics - (see key).
